Confusion as New APC Emerges in Kaduna, Gov. Rufai Stoned in Zaria
It promises to be a difficult week for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kaduna State as the week started for them on a low. Just before the news of Gov. Nasiru el-Rufai’s stoning in Zaria yesterday settles down, reports of a crack in the ruling party began to emerge.
There is now growing confusion and uncertainty among the rank and files of the party over the fate of the party in the state, barely six months after resting power from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The party, which is now evidently factionalized, has seen the emergence of a parallel faction who call themselves the New APC, reminiscent of the New PDP. The New APC, which is now spearheaded by Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, a retired federal Permanent Secretary and one time Secretary to the State Government, accused the state governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, of hijacking party apparatus and derailing from the idea of true change that millions of Kaduna people yearn and voted for by promoting anti-people polices.
The group, which is also made up of prominent personalities, among them Hajiya Hafsat Baba, Alhaji Kabir Umar (former ANPP state party chairman), Mr. Tom Mataimaki Maiyashi (former education commissioner), Alhaji Lawal Maiturare, Nasiru Ahmed (special adviser on strategy to Senator Shehu Sani) and Alh. Murtala Abubakar (the party’s Publicity Secretary) claims to be the “True APC”.
Reacting to the claims, Salisu Wusono, the party’s acting Publicity Secretary in the state said the party remains loyal and committed to the governor, saying that all of the governor’s policies are in line with the party’s manifestos and agenda. He therefore cautioned the New APC against submitting to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) skirmishes to distract the governor from his good works.
According to Wusono, “We are running the affairs of the party according to the manifesto, constitution and ideology of APC. It’s laughable if somebody in Kaduna State said APC is not functioning because the party has a governor in Kaduna, 90 per cent of members in the state and national assemblies; so anybody who comes out to say APC in the state is in disarray is a joker”.
In an earlier Press Conference held by the New APC in Kaduna, the Publicity Secretary of the new APC, Murtala Abubakar said that the “members of ‘True –APC’ are responsible people who successfully worked hard to remove the PDP and put our party in power, it is with tremendous reluctance that we make public issues and grievances that should have been addressed responsibly”. Noting that they have exhausted all available avenues and that keeping mute would mean failing millions of people who expect the party to operate with requisite standard of responsibility and accommodation if they continue to remain silent.
